چکیده

Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences 415 July August 2008 Excipients are primarily used as diluents, binders, disintegrants, adhesives, glidants and sweeteners in conventional dosage forms like tablets and capsules1. As the establishment of toxicity and approval from regulatory authorit ies poses a problem with synthetic excipients, of late more interest is being shown by researchers in herbal excipients. The drawback posed by heavy metal contamination often associated with herbal excipients is superseded by their lack of toxicity, easy availability, and economic considerations in pharmaceutical industry as compared to their synthetic counterparts. Present day consumers look for natural ingredients in food, drugs, and cosmetics as they believe that anything natural will be more safe and devoid of side effects.

Herbal Excipients in Novel Drug Delivery Systems

The use of natural excipients to deliver the bioactive agents has been hampered by the synthetic materials. However advantages offered by these natural excipients are their being non-toxic, less expensive and freely available. The performance of the excipients partly determines the quality of the medicines. The traditional concept of the excipients as any component other than the active substan...

Spectrofluorimetric Method for Determination of Citalopram in Bulk and Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms

A simple accurate, sensitive reproducible spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the analysis of citalopram in pure and pharmaceutical dosage form. Citalopram showed strong native fluorescence in 0.05 M sulphuric acid having excitation at 239 nm and emission at 300 nm. All parameters like the effect of different solvents, pH, dilutions, reaction time, temperature and effect of excipients ...

Impaired Mitochondrial Respiratory Functions and Oxidative Stress in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

We have previously shown a tissue-specific increase in oxidative stress in the early stages of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. In this study, we investigated oxidative stress-related long-term complications and mitochondrial dysfunctions in the different tissues of STZ-induced diabetic rats (>15 mM blood glucose for 8 weeks). These animals showed a persistent increase in reactive ox...

Effects of Short-term Exposure of Simulated Acid Rain on the Growth of Acacia Nilotica

BALASUBRAMANIAN, G., UDAYASOORIAN, C. & PRABU, P. C. 2007. Effects of short-term exposure of simulated acid rain on the growth of Acacia nilotica. The response and measurable effects of simulated acid rain at different pH levels of 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5 and 7.0 on Acacia nilotica seedlings grown on black and red soils were investigated for six months. A set of 10 potted seedlings in each treatment...
